RMS Award Application

The Royal Microscopical Society runs a number of competitions each year and bestows the top names in microscopy with a selection of exclusive awards

Award Documentation Required
RMS President’s Award (open for nominations 1 March 2025 - 30 April 2025) Letter of support for the nomination (one page maximum) highlighting the specific contribution made.
RMS Vice Presidents’ Award (open for nominations 1 March 2025 - 30 April 2025) Letter of support (one page maximum) along with letters of support from two other individuals.
RMS Scientific Achievement Award (open for nominations 1 March 2025 - 30 April 2025)

Nominees CV (If the person is unaware that they are being nominated for the award, a shorter CV i.e. a bio from LinkedIn will be accepted).

A list of the nominee’s publications.

A short resumé (maximum 300 words) of the nominee’s contributions together with a list of their top 5 publications.

A covering letter stating why the nominee should be considered for the award.

1-2 additional letters of support from colleagues.
Chris Hawes Award for Outreach and Education (open for nominations 1 March 2025 - 30 April 2025)

Nominees CV which should include any relevant publications and/or outreach activities. (If the person is unaware that they are being nominated for the award, a shorter CV i.e. a bio from LinkedIn will be accepted).

A letter summarising why they should be considered for the award, including a statement (maximum one page) outlining their merits and their suitability for the award including the particular contribution they have made to the field.
RMS Early Career Award (open for nominations 1 January 2026 - 13 February 2026)

A statement (maximum 300 words) stating the merits of the applicant, a brief summary of the applicant’s research, accompanied by no more than one figure and a statement of the applicant’s suitability for the award.

A letter of support (maximum one page) from the nominees line manager/supervisor.
The Pearse Prize (The Pearse Prize is normally awarded every 5 years and the RMS will advertise when nominations are next being accepted)

A letter of recommendation containing a statement of reasons for the nomination, supported by two persons familiar with the work of the candidate.

A CV including a list of publications.

Written consent from the candidate.

  • Alan Agar Award for Electron Microscopy
  • Award for Light Microscopy
  • Award for Innovation in Applied Microscopy for Engineering, Physical and Material Sciences
  • AFM and SPM Award
  • Award for Life Sciences
  • Award for Flow Cytometry
  • Award for Data Analysis in Imaging

If self-nominating:

  • A CV and a letter stating which Section Award they wish to be considered for.

If being nominated by someone else:

  • Nominee’s CV and a statement (maximum one page in length) outlining the merits of the candidate and their suitability for the specific award (If the person is unaware that they are being nominated for the award, a shorter CV i.e. a bio from LinkedIn will be accepted).
