RMS Virtual Bursaries

The same eligibility criteria applies as with a standard travel bursary, however the application is made to help towards the costs of registration fees to attend virtual conferences where you are presenting, rather than the costs of travelling to them.

We are aware that our members may have had restrictions placed on paying to attend online events by their workplaces or institutions and this bursary is designed to allow them to still participate in events they would normally have attended.

If you are an early career researcher, normally within 12 years of graduating, or are employed in a support role in microscopy or cytometry then these are for you.

If you have been a member of the Royal Microscopical Society for more than twelve months at the time of application and have been accepted to present a paper involving microscopy at a conference or workshop - either orally or as a poster - then you are eligible.

Bursary applications are considered by the Executive Honorary Secretary and the Honorary Treasurer. When there is a heavy demand preference will be given to those with one or more years of continuous membership. On occasions we also offer bursaries for specific events which will be publicised separately.

Please note:

  • A member can apply for up to £100 for a virtual registration fee.
  • It is anticipated that where these sums are insufficient to cover the full registration fee of attending a virtual event, they will be used as ‘leverage’ for additional support from elsewhere.
  • After the conference the member will prepare a short report for publication in infocus Magazine.

RMS Virtual Bursary Application Form

As a means of enabling our members to attend virtual events during the COVID-19 pandemic, Council has set aside a special bursary fund for this specific purpose. If you have been a member of the Royal Microscopical Society for more than one year at the time of application and have been accepted to present a paper involving microscopy at a conference or workshop, either orally or as a poster, you are eligible to apply for support from this fund.

Please note: Proof of registration will be required if you are awarded a bursary.
