Leeds Electron Microscopy and Spectroscopy Centre (LEMAS)

LEMAS is part of the Bragg Centre for Materials Research and is jointly run by the Faculty of Engineering and Physical Sciences and the School of Earth & Environment at Leeds, and aims to develop and underpin Imaging and Characterisation techniques for the examination of the morphology, structure and chemical composition of Advanced Materials, including soft materials, drawn from the physical, engineering and geosciences. LEMAS serves almost 400 users not only from across the University but also from many outside Higher Education institutions as well as industry.

Shared Access

LEMAS is an open-access Small Research Facility (SRF) for internal and external users, enquiries and bookings can be made through the facility staff – All access is charged to recover running costs that include Staff salaries, service contracts and consumables. HEFCE Transparent Approach to Costing (TRAC). Microscope access can be fully assisted or non-assisted and is charged in 3/4 hour sessions at a flat rate for each instrument.

The microscopes can also be accessed via the Henry Royce Institute Researcher and Student Equipment Access Schemes which offers UK EPSRC-eligible researchers “free at point of use” pump-priming access to a range of complementary techniques and associated expertise.

Funding

The majority of the funding for LEMAS is won in open competition from funding agencies worldwide, with the majority coming from UK government sources. HEFCE, EPSRC, NERC and to a lesser extent BBSRC and MRC provides a large proportion of the funding in the form of responsive mode funding and strategic equipment funding. The University of Leeds, the European Research Council and Industry are also funders of the research and the capital equipment. LEMAS has a strategic partnership with Oxford Instruments.
