Centre for Cell Imaging

The Liverpool Centre for Cell Imaging (CCI) is a world class resource for imaging projects, member of the UK Node of Euro-BioImaging. Since 2002, it has been housed in a state-of-the-art suite of custom-designed temperature-controlled rooms in the Biosciences Building (Institute of Systems, Molecular and Integrative Biology). We specialise in a range of microscopy techniques including confocal, epifluorescent, lightsheet, high-content, atomic force and super-resolution light microscopy, as well as having expertise in post-acquisition analysis.

As a Liverpool Shared Research Facility on campus, the CCI has been designed to cater for a wide variety of applications, for academy and industry alike. The Liverpool Shared Research Facilities is an organisation within the University of Liverpool Faculty of Health and Life Sciences that promotes access to enabling technology and the academic expertise that supports it.

Sample Preparation

Keywords - Biological: Cryosectioning | Immunolabelling | Plunge Freezing

We are happy to help users to find the best way to prepare their own samples. We can accommodate a variety of samples, ranging from simple slides to multi-well plates and samples embedded in 3D matrices for the light sheet microscope.

Data Analysis

KEYWORDS - SOFTWARE: IMAGEJ | FIJI | IMARIS | MATLAB | Knime Analytics platform | Ilastik | MICROMANAGER | ZEISS ZEN Blue/Black | OMERO
KEYWORDS - HARDWARE: 5 WORKSTATIONS / UPGRADED DATA STORAGE: SERVER 4U DUAL SOCKET INTEL -24 BAYS SAS/SATA, 500TB WITH MIRROR FOR SELECTED DATA, OS RED HAT, HOSTING THE OMERO SOFTWARE (VA TECHNOLOGIES)

Modern biological imaging produces vast amounts of data. At the CCI we have the infrastructure and expertise to be able to support users in everything from short-term storage of a few gigabytes to the long-term storage of terabytes. All of which can be made accessible on or off-site.
We have a suite of dedicated workstations, running a range of software packages (such as Fiji, Matlab and Imaris) that can be used for image analysis and processing, and a full-time Image Analyst.
The Liverpool CCI is proud to have adopted OMERO to facilitate records management and storage. This server-based system greatly facilitates the storage, access (public or private) and archival of imaging data.

Shared Access

The Centre for Cell Imaging was established as a Shared Research Facility (SRF) in May 2011. The CCI is a part of the Liverpool Shared Research Facilities, an evolution of the former Technology Directorate, that encompasses 17 different research facilities across the University (including bioimaging, bioresources and multi-omics) and aims to deliver flexible access to world leading research expertise and equipment.

Funding

The CCI is under the umbrella of the Liverpool Shared Research Facilities. Amongst the last grants, MRC (clinical infrastructures - Next generation microscopy), BBSRC (Alert 13 and Alert 14).
