ASCUS Lab

The ASCUS Lab is a non-profit, publicly accessible, biosafety level 1 art-science lab. We invite artists, scientists and members of the general public to get hands-on with with the tools of science and art through DIY experimenting and microscopy. The lab is accessible to anyone no matter your level of experience; we offer training for beginners, tailored project support and offer art-science workshops. We are also experienced in developing and delivering hands-on public engagement events.

We have a suite of ex-research microscopes for a variety of applications including brightfield, darkfield, phase contrast and fluorescence microscopy.

 

Applications

Our facility is open for a variety of sample types and applications. Many lab users bring in environmental samples, household items, art materials and other objects to view under the microscope and use images taken during their session in creative projects. For example printing images onto textiles or using images to inspire artwork. We also have researchers who bring in prepared slides relevant to their research to use in public engagement events.

 

Sample Preparation

We can assist with sample preparation of a variety of samples for light microscopy. We have a hand microtome for thin sectioning and have a variety of stains for different applications.

 

Data Analysis

We can assist with identifying certain components of samples where our lab staff's expertise allows or direct you to resources that can further assist. Images captured on the microscopes are sent to you after your session.

 

Funding Overview

We charge a small fee to use our microscopes and for one-to-one training/project support. Contact us to learn more about our costs.
